At&T to iPhone Customers - No Tiered Data Plan in the Works

At&T seems to be scrambling to patch holes in its iPhone aid infrastructure and business model and customer base that seem to be appearing faster that At&T can deal with them.

Firstly, At&T has prolonged to vociferously deny rapidly spreading rumors that the business has plans to introduce a tiered data pricing plan for its iPhone customers. This after widely publicized problems with bandwidth abuse by a certain small ration of iPhone users. At&T has conceded that something will have to be done about it, something that dis-incentivizes immoderate bandwidth use, or perhaps on the flip side, incentivizes inexpensive use. How to do whether of those things (without a tiered data pricing plan) is the request before them.

Then there are the 3G network complaints that iPhone users are having with At&T, to which At&T has responded with the temporary band-aid job of installing more free Wi-Fi hotspots in reception-challenged locations. That's great for the short term, but what's it going to do in the long term to keep people from twiddling their thumbs on a Blackberry or Droid until Verizon ultimately strikes a deal with Apple and gets an iPhone of its very own.

At&T to iPhone Customers - No Tiered Data Plan in the Works

Since the publish of iPhone 3.0, 15 million iPhone users linked to the At&T network over 20,000 Wi-Fi hotspots. At&T is hoping that providing more hotspots, its iPhone customers will voluntarily switch to Wi-Fi whenever near one, thereby easing the load on their network. At&T notes that only 3% of its customers (all of them presumably iPhone users) inventory for 40% of their broadband network usage.
